Day 1. Skorradalur – Langholt
Ca. 25 km
The first day will be mostly in the Borgarfjörður country side and on the grassy banks of two beautiful rivers, Grímsá and Hvítá.Hvítá is a glacier river that runs from the Long glacier to the sea and 8 of the top 20 salmon rivers in Iceland run into it.The view today is very nice as we should have a very clear view over to the mountains in the area and Snæfells glacier. We will leave our horses at my friends farm, Langholt and head back to our accommodation.
Day 2. Langholt – Gunnlaugsstaðir
ca. 22 km
From Langholt we will continue our ride through the countryside and pass Deildartunguhver, which is the geysir that produces the most hot water in Europe. From there we will be crossing the river Hvítá, (on a bridge) and soon after that we will start our ride into the more remote areas of Borgarfjörður.We will be leaving our horses at my friend place, Gunnlaugsstaðir and head back to our accommodation for a great dinner.
Day 3. Gunnlaugsstaðir – Brekka
ca. 25 km
We will start our ride along side the famous salmon river Þverá as we will be heading into Norðurárdalur, the North river valley. The landscape there is breathtaking as we will be riding north with the view over the river and the lava fields that cover that valley. We will be riding to the farm Brekka where we will leave the horses for the night and head back home for a great dinner.
Day 4. Brekka – Hraundalur
ca. 38 km
Today will get away from civilization as we will get away from all roads and ride into the hidden valleys. After a short ride we will be taking a quick break in on old pen, which has been used for rounding up the sheep for centuries. Our view will include the very beautiful lake of Hredarvatn among others. On our way we will ride through a deserted valley called Grímsdalur and head through a pass towards lake Langavatn. The view over lake Langavatn is breathtaking as we come through the pass.On day four we will be more or less in areas where very few people go to, so the chances are that we will not be meeting any traveler that day.We will be riding through the Long Valley and follow the coast of the lake there until we come to an old cabin, still used by the farmers in the fall, when they round up their sheep in September/October each year.We will take a good rest there before heading down the valley called Hraundalur or Lava valley. We will leave the horses in Hraundalur and head back home for a good dinner and the hot tub.
Day 5. Hraundalur -Litla Drageyri
ca. 45 km
On our last day of riding, we will be riding along the mountain side with a beautiful view over Borgarfjörður.We will then be heading south on the banks of Long river and through the countryside of Borgarfjörður towards Skorradalur. As this will be a long riding day, we will stop at Staðarhús and rest the horses for a while. After that the horses know the way home and I am sure they will happy to show us their best gaits for the last part of the tour.I am sure the horses will be happy to arrive home after a great trip.
